Fitness Quest - Day 2

I almost skipped the rower today, was still feeling the workout a little bit from yesterday, but didn't want to lose the momentum. Happy I decided I followed thru, as I did a little more than yesterday.

Rowing Machine:
12 min 38sec
238 calories burned
4.8 miles

Drank about 4 glasses of water yesterday, same today, going to have some more water now.
Is it better to schedule a day off of exercise, a day of rest? Or to just plan on exercising everyday? Don't want to overdue it, but don't want to lose the momentum either.

Looking forward to my continuing journey...

Fitness Quest - Reboot

I have now officially begun my Fitness Quest - Reboot, today (9/24/11).

I just sat down and completed 11 1/2 minutes on my rowing machine, which was 210 calories burned and 4.5 miles completed.

The goal is to do 1 session of 10-12 minutes every day for 1 week. Starting the 2nd week I would like to add a 2nd session of 10 minutes per day.

My other goal is to drink 6-8 glasses of water per day and cut back on other drinks.

I figure if I start with smaller goals, it will be easier to stick to them. This will help me to accomplish my bigger goal of getting back in shape, which in turn will help me lose the weight and drop the inches that I do not want.

I hope you will join me on this road and share the experiences from your own Fitness Quest.

Fitness Quest - Re-boot

A number of weeks ago, I had attempted to start my Fitness Quest with little success at the follow through. Now that school is over and summer has officially started (on the calendar, anyway), I have finally found myself feeling a renewed sense of motivation to get started.

The past few weeks, my energy levels have been so low and my motivation was not there. Part of that is from lack of sleep; kids up at strange hours, which means broken sleep for me. Busy weeks and weekends with school, youth sports and family activities. Now that all the kids are home during the day, I am going to need my energy more than ever. To not only keep up with them, but to keep them entertained and from driving each other crazy all summer.

I am positive that if I start really concentrating on eating the right foods and working out that I will find I have more energy, will sleep better, and will feel better overall. I will also find myself better able to keep up with the kids, and probably have more patience to deal with them.

So, I am going to consider today my Fitness Quest - Re-boot. I am going to enter into this Quest with a renewed sense of motivation & determination to follow through and accomplish my goal to get back in shape.

Fitness Quest - Getting Motivated, Finally!!

Ok, so the past week or so has not gone the way I would have liked. My motivation was not there and the weather certainly did not help. The sun was barely out and it was cold, not really my idea of walking weather. Finally, the sun is out and the warm weather is here, at least for a little while according to the forecast. The sun and spring weather has definitely given me a renewed sense of motivation and energy. When it is gloomy and cold, it makes me feel more tired and the quality of my sleep over the past couple of weeks just was not all that great.

On a positive note, I have been making a conscience effort to drink more water, even when I wasn't really working out. I have been getting better at eating breakfast each morning, a couple of times I got distracted, but am definitely getting there.

The next step is to find time each day to get in some kind of workout, whether it be walking, my workout dvds, my rowing machine, or even running around with the kids in the backyard or at the park. Doing something for at least 30 minutes each day and more most days. With the warmer weather and summer on its way, I am sure this will be a lot easier.

There are definitely times where I am going to need to figure out the priority between doing chores when the kids are napping or getting a workout in. Will I be able to find the time later to workout, if I choose to deal with dishes or laundry, or do I workout and then deal with the other things later? These are the things that I will have to figure out on a daily basis as I manage my time and priorities.

Loving the sun!!

Finding Time

On a daily basis I have come to realize that I am always trying to find the time for things.

...time for my family
...time for everyday chores
...time for errands
...time for myself

Now time for myself, is always at the bottom of the list, not sure if this is always a good thing, but it is the way it is. I am trying to make time for myself more of a priority, so as to not neglect the things I need and want as well. I know that if I am doing things that will make me happy, then everyone else will be happier as well. I know that finding time to take a break and relax is good for my own frame of mind, not to mention my patience with everyone else in the family and others.

Time for my family is always a priority, the needs of my kids are on the top of that list, as they are still young and rely on me for things in their daily lives. Doing things with and for Tim ("hubby"), comes next on the list, as I am sure it does for everyone else in a relationship. You want to make sure your other half is happy and that their needs and expectations are met. Finding time to spend with the extended family is also important, whether it be to hang out or to help out. This includes the grand/parents, aunts/uncles, siblings, cousins, etc.

Finding time for everyday chores and errands, is on an as needed basis when I am home with the kids. Errands I try to do one day a week, unless something urgent comes up. Picking up toys, washing and folding laundry, and getting dishes done, seem to be a never-ending task. It always seems like I am constantly trying to play catch up, especially with sports/activities schedules thrown in there for the older kids.

It all comes down to a matter of figuring out the priorities and how to get those things accomplished, while finding a balance between those priorities and my own needs/wants. It is certainly a learning experience and an ever evolving process.

Fitness Quest - Week 1 Reflections

Well the first week went fairly well. Most of the mornings I ate breakfast not too long after getting up. I also managed to drink more water. I still need to get used to drinking more water and less of the other drinks. I did get in a few days of walking and a dance session with the kids this morning.

Still on my to do list:

  • Getting a scale
  • Measurements
    • do tomorrow
  • Getting used to writing updates
    • everyday or at least every other day (so I keep myself motivated)

Starting My Fitness Journal

I am now into week 2 of my fitness quest and things are moving in the right direction. Still a lot to work on, as I reflected on in my last post when I looked back at my 1st week doing this Fitness Quest. This is truly a new journey for me, to getting my body back in shape. Growing up, I was always active in sports and dance, and you could always find my sisters and I running around outside with the neighborhood kids. We never had to find time to workout. It's amazing how when you grow up and have kids, you get out of those daily habits and routines of staying active and now have to make time for them.

These days I am always looking for ways to fit fitness activities into my daily life, ways in which I can also involve my family. Please share your ideas on fitness activities that are great to do with the whole family.

Fitness Quest - 1st 3 days

The first 3 days of my Fitness Quest have certainly had it's moments, both good and bad.

I have successfully gotten myself to eat breakfast everyday, always a good thing. Still working on trying to remember to drink more water and less sugary drinks like lemonade, iced tea, or juice. Did some walking with the kids, ran into a slight snag yesterday when it decided to rain. Need to make sure I do some type of indoor workout on those rainy days.

Things to do:

  • Get a Scale
    • Although I don't plan on weighing in everyday, it would be nice to have some type of way to gauge my success. Weekly weigh-ins should be enough!
  • Take Measurements
    • Do this on a weekly basis!
  • Update my Blog
    • Daily
      • journal entries to keep me on track & motivated
    • Weekly
      • insights, reflections on the week
My goal here is to force myself to think about this journey everyday and truly stick to it. By writing things down, it will keep me honest with myself about whether I am staying focused on my goals. Only then will I stay motivated and truly make the life changes I have been wanting to accomplish.

Thanks for joining me...I look forward to hearing your thoughts, suggestions, and stories about your own journey.

Fitness Quest

Join me as I undertake a journey to getting back in shape. Share your tips, struggles, successes, and stories here and we will go through this fitness quest together.

I don't want to call it a weight loss quest, although my goal is to lose weight while going through this journey to get my body back in shape. The overall goal is to get back in shape, which to me means a full body and mind transformation. I am looking to get that energy back that I always had when I was working out and that frame of mind that always seemed a bit more clear. It always seemed like my focus was always sharper when I was working out, eating right, and taking care of my body & mind.

Now for me eating right is not so much cutting out fast food, as that is not an issue for me. I don't typically, if ever, eat fast food. For me it is going to be more of the struggle to make sure I am drinking enough water and staying hydrated, and also eating meals on a consistent basis. I definitely eat, that's not a problem, it's trying to get myself to eat breakfast first thing in the morning, so that the rest of my meals are not getting too late in the day, and so I can get in some healthy snacks. This will all help to boost my metabolism and get it started burning those calories in the morning.

I also want to be able to fit in some of those close I have, that I was wearing before I had my 3 kids. If I don't get back to that weight and size completely, I at least want to tighten up these muscles and trim some of this fat off my body. That way I can get to a more comfortable place for myself where I can go hiking, skiing, biking, and do other activities with my kids without too much difficulty. I don't think I am setting unrealistic goals for myself. I have decided not to be overly concerned with numbers at this point. I don't want to do weigh-ins or measurements on a daily basis and not sure if I will even do it on a weekly basis. I figure I will be able to notice if things are changing as the close I wear get looser.

My plan is to start by making sure that I start eating consistently, by starting with breakfast each morning this week and drinking more water. I also want to start my exercise program out, by getting back into walking and doing that on a consistent, and hopefully daily, basis. I like to use my rowing machine, so I plan to get back to that. I would also like to go back to using my workout dvds, which consist of the NYC Ballet Workout, Yoga Booty Ballet, and Belly Dancing.

What types of workout music or dvds do you use?
What types of exercise do you like?
Do you belong to a gym?
Do you have someone to workout with?
How do you stay motivated?

I hope you will join me and share your tips, struggles, successes, and stories here. We can do this together...

Hiking in New England - Family Friendly Places?

Hey Everyone!
I am looking to get back into hiking this spring/summer and want to get the kids out there with Tim & I. I know of a few places that I have hiked in the past and know I can check out the NH Mountains website. I am looking for input from people who go hiking with their kids. I am looking for places in New England.
What mountains or trails do you enjoy going to?
What are the best places to begin?
We have toddlers as well as older kids, and would definitely love to hear about your experiences. What have you found our must-haves for packing? Have you used baby carriers while hiking, if so what kind?
Thanks in advance for your help…looking forward to hearing from everyone!

Don't Quit ~ Jill Wolf

Don’t quit when the tide is lowest,
For it’s just about to turn;
Don’t quit over doubts and questions,
For there’s something you may learn.

Don’t quit when the night is darkest,
For it’s just a while ‘til dawn;
Don’t quit when you’ve run the farthest,
For the race is almost won.

Don’t quit when the hill is steepest,
For your goal is almost nigh;
Don’t quit, for you’re not a failure
Until you fail to try.
